    Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo is a grass, but it looks and behaves similar to a hardwood so offers a great alternative flooring
product. Bamboo is approximately as hard as red oak and hard maple and comes in a natural blond
tone as well as a carmelized darker shade. The stalks are glued together either horizontally or vertically
and offer two completely different appearances. It reaches maturity in 3 to 7 years and when harvested,
generally stimulates new growth rather than killing the plants. The bamboo used in our flooring is not a
food source or habitat for panda bears, which generally inhabit higher elevation forests. Despite the long-
distance transport of the product to the United States, the durability, hardness, and short regeneration
time of bamboo provide justification for specifying bamboo flooring instead of wood. The primary
drawback of bamboo flooring is the fact that the product is glued-up with urea-formaldehyde binders.

The flooring is available as prefinished or unfinished product and is sold in all six foot lengths or a mixture of 2,3,4, and 6 foot lengths. The
finish is five coats of polyurethane with aluminum oxide. The top two layers contain no aluminum oxide since it offers such impressive
scratch resistance that it is difficult to sand when recoating is necessary.

Bamboo prices range from approximately $5 to $6.25 per square foot.

    Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. It has been
used as a flooring material for more than a hundred years due to its
durability, resistance to moisture damage, and acoustical and
thermal insulation properties. A typical tree provides hundreds of
pounds of cork at each harvesting and survives the harvest, which
    happens approximately every nine years.

There are many styles and patterns available in both 12”X12” tiles and
1’X3’ floating floor panels. They are available as unfinished or
prefinished with carnauba wax or polyurethane. The tiles are glued
down to a subfloor and are suitable in any room in the house. Floating
floor planks are glued to one another and contain a medium density
fiberboard sandwiched between two layers of cork which can swell as
a result of water and moisture. Solid cork does not absorb moisture
because it consists of many air filled cells so is a good choice for
    kitchens and bathrooms.

We carry two brands of cork flooring, Expanko and Vida Cork.
Expanko tiles are available in many solid styles and the darker shades
are burned, making the color go all the way through the tile.  They can be purchased prefinished with a matte polyurethane,
prefinished with carnauba wax, or unfinished.

Vida Cork is prefinished with one of our favorite floor finishes, OSMO Polyx Oil so it can be spot repaired at any time.  This finish is less
hard than polyurethane and will require a bit more maintenance.

Prices range from $3.50 to $13.95 per square foot
Forbo Marmoleum

Due to its environmental benefits and contemporary colors, linoleum is enjoying a return to popularity. It is
extremely durable, water-resistant, easy to clean and durable and is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Unlike
vinyl flooring which has a thin color layer that can wear off in just a few years, linoleum is colored all the way
through the material and easily lasts 30 years or more. Linoleum does not contain significant petroleum-based
products or chlorinated chemicals, as does vinyl (PVC) flooring-which is often mistakenly referred to as
linoleum.

Linoleum is made from all renewable materials including linseed oil, pigments and pine flour with a natural
jute backing. It comes in over 100 colors in the sheet material and 30 colors in the tile line.

Prices are $31.95 per square yard for sheets and approximately $4.25 per square foot for tiles

Merida Meridian Carpets has been a pioneer in the use of plant fibers for carpets and area
rugs. They offer carpets made of paper, sisal, coir, jute, hemp, seagrass, paper and wool
blends with natural latex and jute backings. Plant fiber carpets are completely
biodegradable and rapidly renewable. As with all natural fibers, variations in color and
texture are common. These rugs are have some limitations and are not for everyone. Plant
fiber carpets are typically not as durable as wool and because they absorb liquids, have a
greater tendency to stain. Some of the looser woven products can dent underneath heavy
furniture. However, they create a very natural look and they do not generate static
    electricity.

Prices range from $15 to $120 per square yard

Nature's Carpet is a series of 100% natural, biodegradable and ultra-low toxicity
floorcoverings for your health and comfort. It is a product that meets and even exceeds the
high standards demanded both by environmental movement and by individuals with high
sensitivity to chemical toxins. Manufacturing from all-natural and renewable resources,
Nature's Carpet can also be seen as part of the fight to preserve the world we live in, and a
necessary corollary to recycling and re-use.

Prices range from $37.69-$64.29 per square yard; Jute underlay $10.69 per square yard
    Pioneer Millworks

Pioneer Millworks reclaims numerous wood species from commercial and industrial buildings
built between the turn of the century and the early 1930s.  This was a time when the railroads
were shipping materials across the country inexpensively, the old growth forests were being
cut with a vengence, and the stell "I" beam had not yet become the standard for heavy
construction.  Today, as these buildings fall to the wreckers, the structural timbers can often be
salvaged and resawn for a second use.

What are the advantages of using reclaimed wood for your project?
Aesthetics: The signs of previous use evident in reclaimed material enhances the
beauty of the old growth wood that was cut for use before we realized the
destructive nature of that practice.

Environmental Responsibility:  We all know the strain that our forests are under
these days, particularly the old growth reserves.  The use of reclaimed material is
a choice that we can make to reduce the impact on our woodlands.

History: Many clients enjoy the fact that they will be using wood that has had
another life.  One of the great attractions of reclaimed woodwork is the chance
to incorporate a sense of history into a project, while giving new life to a
disappearing natural resource.

Available species number greater than forty options of reclaimed hardwoods
and softwoods in different grades, widths and lengths.  For a durable,
environmentally responsible and stunningly beautiful floor, look no further than
Pioneer Millworks.

Stability: Moisture content in reclaimed timbers generally run in the mid to low teens and this means minimal movement.  Joints stay
tight, and bowing, splitting and twisting after installation is virtually nonexistent.  Board stock is then kiln dried down to
levels appropriate for flooring, trim or cabinet work.
