Squak Mountain Stone
This countertop was developed by a entrepreneur from the Northwest as part of her master's
thesis. The basis of the project was to produce a building material made out of locally
sourced and recycled materials. After graduation, she continued to work to commercialize
the new material. The final result of her work is Squak Mountain Stone, a soapstone or
limestone-like countertop material made out of Portland cement, waste flyash, waste glass
dust, mixed waste paper, and pigments.
Squak Mountain Stone(TM) Countertop is made from 3% post-consumer and 64% post-
industrial recycled content. The post-consumer material is mixed waste paper from AtWork!,
a non-profit whose mission is to help people with disabilities become productive and
contributory members of their communities. This mixed waste paper can be seen in the
finished product.
The post-industrial material includes crushed glass dust from a local company who also
sources local post-consumer & and post-industrial glass and class F coal flash from a regional electricity generating plant (mainly of
silicon, aluminum, iron and calcium). Portland cement, although not a recycled material, is sourced from a manufacturer in the
SODO district of Seattle. Non-toxic iron oxide pigments are mixed in for color.
In keeping with the goal of sourcing locally, all materials in Squak Mountain Stone(TM) are sourced within a 125 mile radius of Seattle,
WA. The crushed glass is 100% recycled from mainly local window manufacturers and installers.
In addition, for every pound of portland cement manufactured, one pound of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is released into
the atmosphere. In addition to substituting fly-ash for portland cement in the Squak Mountain Stone countertop, the manufacturer
makes a pound for pound investment in renewable energy through a program called Green Tags. The manufacturer calculates how
many pounds of portland cement (and subsequently, carbon dioxide) is used to make Squak Mountain Stone countertops and then
purchases enough Green Tags to offset that amount by 100%. The result is a net zero impact of Squak Mountain Stone's cement on
global warming.
Every Green Tag prevents 1,400 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. This is
approximately equal to the effect of not driving your car for six weeks.
Squak Mountain StoneTM has a factory applied two-coat finish system which makes the countertop resistant to stains.
This countertop receives two coats of a factory-applied sealer called Super Shield Top Coat. After the last coat has dried, the surface
is hand-buffed to a satin finish. The sealer is a food-grade acrylic sealer which is easily spot-repairable.
Note: This finish makes countertops resistant to spills, but does not make the countertop stain proof. Although the finish helps protect the
countertops from spills for up to 24 hours, we strongly advise wiping up any acidic or oily spills immediately.
We recommend site applying 1-3 coats of the Super Shield Top Coat after installation. At least one coat is recommended due to the
likelihood of minor scrapes and scratches during installation.
Here are the basic application installations:
• Mist on a light coat, allowing it to soak in. DO NOT LET IT PUDDLE. Work in any excess with a fine synthetic steel wool or fine grit
foam pad (such as Norton s 3X 320 grit). Stop when the sealer gets tacky.
• If additional coats are desired, allow the previous coat to dry to the touch (about 10-15 minutes, depending on temperature
and humidity). Then mist on a light additional coat. Work in the excess with pad. Apply more coats as desired by repeating
these steps. Let the final coat dry for at least 1 hour. Sealer cures in 24 hours.
• Additional coats provide a more glossy finish and some additional protection.
Cleaning: For spills and regular cleaning, use a soft sponge and a mild dish soap. Regular use of abrasives and abrasive cleaning
pads will wear out the sealer.
Maintenance: Be prepared to spot repair the finish as needed on a monthly basis. The finish for Squak Mountain Stone Countertops
can be scratched and damaged. It also can be easily repaired.
Repair instructions:
• Use a fine grit (300-400 grit) sanding pad to buff out marks on the sealed surface. This will help remove any loose sealer and
blur the edge around the damaged area so that the repair will be less likely to show
• Apply at least 2 light coats of Top Coat sealer. Mist on first coat, allowing it to soak in. DO NOT LET IT PUDDLE. Work in any excess
with a fine synthetic steel wool or fine grit foam pad (such as Norton s 3X 320 grit). Stop when the sealer gets tacky. Once the
first coat is dry to the touch (about 10-15 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity), mist on a lighter second coat.
Work in the excess with your pad. Apply additional coats as desired by repeating these steps. Let the final coat dry for at least
1 hour. The sealer cures in 24 hours.
We recommend professional installation of this product. Material cost is approximately $50 per square foot

Vetrazzo Recycled Glass
Vetrazzo countertops have mixed colors of
recyled glass chips embedded in a masonry
binder for a terrazzo-like look. Vetrazzo is
available in a wide variety of colors and in
thicknesses from 1”-1-1/2”. The manufacturer
has certified each product contains 80-90%
post-consumer waste and is proud to say
they recycled over 100 tons of glass last year.
All of the glass used in Vetrazzo is recycled,
and it makes up about 85% of the total
material. Most of the glass comes from
curbside recycling programs. Other
glass comes from windows, dinnerware,
stemware, windshields, stained glass,
laboratory glass, reclaimed glass from building
demolition, traffic lights and other
unusual sources. Every Vetrazzo surface has its own history. The company tracks that history, and after you purchase and register
Vetrazzo, we provide a Certificate of Transformation that tells you where the glass in your Vetrazzo came from.
Vetrazzo surfaces give you an alternative to using non-renewable resources (like virgin granite, for example), and provides a new
market for recycled glass, including glass that cannot be recycled elsewhere. This product is made in the US and is returnable to the
company for remanufacture into another Vetrazzo countertop upon removal.

IceStone® durable surface material is made from recycled glass and concrete. It is Cradle to
Cradle certified as well as being extremely beautiful.
This product is produced domestically by an environmentally friendly manufacturing process
in Brooklyn, New York. Icestone countertops rival the strength of quarried stone, yet actively
reduce the waste stream by redirecting glass from landfills to be reused in the products

IceStone products contain recycled content that ranges from 70% to 75% of the product by
weight. Of the recycled content, generally 80-100% is pre-consumer waste, with the
balance being post-consumer waste.
IceStone durable surfaces contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thus emit no
VOCs. We recommend that IceStone be used in conjunction with certain low-VOC or no-VOC sealants.
IceStone is the first and only durable surface to have achieved Cradle to Cradle certification. McDonough Braungart Design
